Punjab launches free public transport to ease impact of petrol price hike

03 April, 2026 17:16

LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced that public transport will now be free in all cities to help citizens cope with the recent rise in fuel prices.

Commuters will no longer need to buy tickets for services such as the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus, Speedo Bus, and Green Electro Bus.

Additional Relief Measures

  • Farmers: Rs100 diesel subsidy per liter for each acre
  • Registered motorcycle riders: Rs100 subsidy for every 20 liters of petrol purchased

These measures come after the federal government raised petrol prices by Rs137.23 per liter to Rs458.41 and high-speed diesel by Rs184.49 to Rs520.35 per liter. The petrol levy was also increased from Rs106 to Rs160.61 per liter as part of federal revenue plans.

Officials said these steps are meant to provide immediate financial relief to citizens and farmers affected by rising fuel costs.
