IMF Warns Middle East Crisis May Hurt Global Economy
WASHINGTON — The chief of the International Monetary Fund has issued a warning, stating that the continued turmoil in the Middle East is likely to undermine global economic growth and increase global prices.
Speaking ahead of the Fund’s next global outlook, Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva stated that the crisis has seriously disrupted energy supplies, with large amounts of oil production stopped after Iran effectively closed the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for almost one-fifth of the world’s shipments of gas and oil.
She pointed out that even if the dispute is swiftly settled, the IMF is anticipated to raise its inflation forecast and reduce its estimates for global growth. The situation is expected to be the main topic of conversation at the World Bank and IMF Spring Meetings in Washington next week.
On April 14, the IMF will publish its revised World Economic Outlook, which will include a number of economic scenarios. Due to the conflict’s unequal economic impact and tighter financial circumstances, the Fund has already hinted at a potential downgrading. Global growth was predicted to be 3.3 percent in 2026 and 3.2 percent in 2027 prior to the crisis.
Geopolitical tensions, technology advancements, climate-related shocks, and demographic changes have all contributed to increased uncertainty in the global economy, according to Georgieva, who warned that these interrelated issues could prolong instability.
The head of the IMF claims that the world’s oil supply has drastically decreased, with interruptions affecting not just energy but also allied industries like industrial gases and fertilizers. Even a brief war would have a detrimental effect on the world economy, she continued, but a protracted conflict would increase inflationary pressures and further impede growth.
