Punjab to Launch Free Transport in 17 Districts

07 April, 2026 11:37

The Punjab government has decided to introduce free transport services in 17 districts to provide relief to citizens facing rising fuel costs.

The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Officials reviewed the impact of increasing oil prices on transport fares before approving the plan.

Pilot Project in Three Major Cities

As part of the initiative, a pilot project will begin in Gujranwala, Multan, and Sialkot.

Authorities have been asked to submit a detailed report on transport fares per kilometre within 24 hours. This report will help shape the wider rollout across other districts.

Focus on Price Control Measures

During the meeting, officials also reviewed food prices across Punjab. A comparison showed that flour prices in the province are lower than in other regions.

Flour is currently cheaper by Rs.427 compared to Sindh, Rs.823 compared to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Rs.790 compared to Balochistan. Prices of pulses, fruits, and vegetables were also reported to be relatively stable, with sufficient stock available.

Steps Against Inflation and Hoarding

The Chief Minister directed authorities to reassess official food prices and submit a new report. Strict action has been ordered to prevent hoarding of essential items.

The Punjab Energy Regulatory Authority has been assigned to monitor and regulate LPG prices across the province.

Officials have also urged traders and shopkeepers to follow government rates and avoid overpricing. Authorities say enforcement of price control rules will be increased in the coming days.

Relief Measures for Citizens

The free transport plan is part of broader efforts to reduce the financial burden on the public. Rising fuel prices have increased daily travel costs, especially for low-income groups.

The government says these steps aim to provide immediate relief while maintaining control over inflation.
