NADRA provides update on CNIC applicants’ signature rules

22 May, 2026 14:40

LAHORE: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has clarified that signing is optional when applying for a first Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC).

According to officials, applicants who do not sign or cannot sign due to illiteracy will have “N/A” printed in the signature section of their CNIC.

NADRA also said that no fingerprints or other marks are printed in place of a signature to avoid misuse or forgery.

Guidelines for Mobile App Users

The authority advised people using the mobile app not to upload images of fingerprints or other marks, as this may delay their application process.

Updating or Adding Signature

For citizens who already have a CNIC and want to add or update their signature, NADRA said they can submit a modification request. The signature can also be updated at the time of CNIC renewal.

First CNIC Now Free

NADRA has also announced that first-time applicants can now get their CNIC free of cost by visiting any NADRA center.

The standard processing time is 15 days. However, for urgent service, the CNIC is issued in 12 days with a fee of Rs1,150, while the executive category takes 6 days with a fee of Rs2,150.

The initiative aims to make identity registration easier and more accessible for citizens across Pakistan.
