September 1965: Second Day of the Pakistan-India War

On the second day of the September 1965 war, tensions between Pakistan and India continued to rise.

Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri threatened Pakistan with further war but also acknowledged that Pakistani forces had shot down four Indian aircraft the previous day.

Indian Army Chief General J.N. Chaudhuri met senior military officers in occupied Kashmir to discuss the situation.

Meanwhile, former Pakistani President Ayub Khan addressed the nation and warned that India’s hostile policies towards Pakistan and Kashmir had created a serious situation. He said Pakistan would respond strongly to Indian aggression and fulfil its commitment to the people of Kashmir.

Former Azad Jammu and Kashmir President Sardar Abdul Qayyum also warned India, saying its aggression would have serious consequences.

International observers expressed concern over the reported Indian air attacks. Pakistani military formations were also issued warning orders to move to designated concentration areas by the morning of September 2.

On the Kashmir front, Pakistani forces attacked Indian positions and installations near Sonamarg. In the Chamb sector, Pakistani troops advanced eastward and reportedly captured 15 Indian tanks and took around 150 Indian soldiers as prisoners of war.
