Relief expected for electricity consumers using up to 200 units

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has rejected the summary seeking increase in the price of electricity for consumers using up to 200 units.

According to sources, the Premier rejected the proposal of the economic team and directed not to increase the tariff for those using up to 200 units of electricity.

Sources said that about 2 crore protected consumers will be provided subsidy in power tariff in the budget, the next financial year electricity rates will not be increased for protected domestic consumers.

In addition, RS160 billion subsidy will be provided to protected consumers by the end of the current financial year, which will be borne by the government itself.

Reports said the increase in electricity tariffs for major consumers will take effect from the first month of the new fiscal year.

The budget was originally due to be presented on June 7 but was delayed because of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to China from June 4 to June 8.
