Samsung likely to launch affordable Fold phone

16 March, 2024 12:45

To attract more customers towards its Galaxy Fold lineup, Samsung is rumoured to launch an affordable device in the lineup.

We have already seen some Fan Editions of Samsung’s high-end Galaxy line up and now the similar approach is being considered towards its folding devices.

The company currently has two folding phones in the lineup the Galaxy Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z flip.

It is unlikely that Samsung would consider a FE model of the Galaxy Z flip anytime soon, but a Galaxy Fold FE phone is very much on cards.

“Samsung Electronics is developing two Galaxy Z Fold 6 models, a new Z Fold with a pen input function and a model without pen input. This is a strategy to expand demand by reducing the price burden on foldable smartphones,” according to South Korean tech website ETnews.

The Samsung Fold 6 FE device would compete against Chinese devices from the likes of Huawei, Xiaomi, and OnePlus, which are available at much affordable prices.

The move will put Samsung in a better positioned ahead of Apple’s rumored folding phone, which could arrive as soon as 2026.

The folding phones have been expensive compared to regular flagships.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 costing $1,799.99 / £1,749 / AU$2,599 on release. The cheapest foldable on the market right now is The Motorola Razr 2023, at $999.99 / £1,049.99 / AU$1,499.

Samsung new phone would need to be as close to the $1,000 / £1,000 mark as possible to compete.
