Relive 1992 World Cup victory on 32nd anniversary

25 March, 2024 10:41

It has been 32-years, but still feels like yesterday when Pakistan lifted the ICC Cricket World Cup trophy under the leadership of Imran Khan.

Young Ramiz Raja took the catch on the ball of Imran Khan to hand Pakistan a 22-run victory over tournament favourites England in the final on March 25 at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The Men in Green were on the verge of getting eliminated from the tournament at one stage, however, they made a grand comeback and went on to win the tournament.

Whether, it was the rookie batter Inzamamul Haq, or tingling pacer Wasim Akram all played their part in the historic feat.

At one stage rain affected the group match which proved to be the most significant for the 1992 champions, as it saved Imran Khan’s boys from getting knocked out from the tournament.

Pakistan were invincible afterwards in all the eliminators as they brushed aside all odds to conquer the world.

Khan played a captain’s knock of 72 runs despite a shoulder injury to boost Pakistan to 250 after winning the toss.

Young duo, Mushtaq Ahmed and Wasim Akram, made that target impossible for the English men.

Mushtaq picked up three wickets for 41 runs while Akram delivered two magical back-to-back deliveries to send Allan Lamb and Chris Lewis packing.

Akram also ended up with three wickets and was declared man of the match for his game-changing spell.

Skipper Imran Khan retired from cricket after making his side the world champions.
