Muhammad Asif clinches World Snooker Championship title

06 November, 2024 20:21

Pakistani cueist Mohammad Asif has made history by winning the IBSF World Snooker Championship for the third time.

In a thrilling final, Asif defeated Iran’s Asian champion Ali Ghareghozlou 5-3 to claim the prestigious title.

Asif, 42, from Faisalabad, continued his remarkable form throughout the 9-frame final, securing victory after a dominating performance.

This win marks Asif’s third World Snooker Championship title, having previously won the competition in 2012 and 2019.

His victory also ties him with Indian cueist Pankaj Advani, who has won the World Snooker Championship three times as well.

Throughout the tournament, Asif showcased his exceptional skill, setting a new record with six century breaks. He reached the final after defeating Cyprus’ Michael Georgiou 5-3 in a closely contested semi-final.

The Chairman of the Pakistan Snooker and Billiards Association, Alamgir Sheikh, along with other officials, congratulated Asif on his outstanding victory, calling it a great honor for Pakistan.

“We are incredibly proud of Mohammad Asif’s achievement. His success not only highlights his dedication and skill but also brings pride to Pakistan,” said Sheikh.

He added that, similar to the recognition given to javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem for his gold medal at the Paris Olympics, Asif’s third World Snooker Championship title should be celebrated and rewarded accordingly.
