ICC Champions Trophy matches in Rawalpindi likely to be relocated

17 December, 2024 10:56

The ICC Champions Trophy matches in Rawalpindi are likely to be relocated as broadcasters recommending three venues due to logistical and financial challenges.

According to reports, the matches could be limited to three venues, Karachi, Lahore and Dubai.

The broadcasters said it is difficult to have teams available at four venues, with concerns have been raised about increased expenses and logistical hurdles for the fourth venue.

Consequently, Karachi, Lahore, and Dubai are being considered as the primary venues for the event.

The official schedule for the Champions Trophy is expected to be unveiled today. Final decisions will hinge on an agreement currently under review by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

It is worth mentioning here that, the tournament was initially scheduled to be played in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi.

However, after India refusal to travel to Pakistan, both the Board for Control of Cricket in India and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) came up with a fusion formula with both parties playing ICC tournaments hosted by either country on a neutral venue.

Hence Dubai was added for the next year’s tournament.

Under this arrangement, Pakistan will play its matches in India at neutral venues until 2027, while India will do the same for events held in Pakistan. This agreement applies to the upcoming ICC tournaments, including the Asia Cup in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in 2026, both hosted by India.

The ICC is expected to formalise and sign off on the agreement soon.
