Steve Smith brakes Younis Khan, Sunil Gavaskar records
Australia great Steve Smith has Test broken records of legendary Pakistan batten Younis Khan and India great Sunil Gawaskar as he notched up his 35th Test ton.
Australia’s stand-in captain Smith, on Thursday smashed 141 in the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka.
His remarkable innings propelled Australia to a commanding total of 628/5.
With his latest century, the right-hander surpassed cricket legends like Younis Khan, Sunil Gavaskar and Brian Lara.
The Australian captain now has 35 centuries, overtaking the trio, who each have 34 centuries.
Currently, Sachin Tendulkar holds the record of most Test tons with 51 centuries to his name. He is followed by Jacques Kallis with 45 and Ricky Ponting with 41.
Smith also surpassed Younis and Gavaskar to become the batter with the most career Test runs among the Indo-Pak duo.
Smith now has 10,140* runs, overtaking Gavaskar’s 10,122 and Younis’ 10,099 and is currently the 13th-highest run-scorer in Test history.
Tendulkar scored 15,921 Test runs, which is most by any batter in red-ball cricket. He is followed by Australia’s Ponting with 13,378 and South Africa’s Kallis with 13,289.
It is pertinent to mention that Australia is currently dominating the Galle Test after batting first.
