Champions Trophy 2025: Australia beat England by 5 wickets

22 February, 2025 22:29

Australia secured a five-wicket victory over England in the opening match of the Champions Trophy 2025 at Lahore on Saturday, Feb 22, with Josh Inglis scoring an unbeaten 120 to steer the chase.

England, batting first, posted 351 for 8 in their 50 overs, largely thanks to Ben Duckett’s career-best 165. The 30-year-old, who missed out during England’s previous T20 campaign, struck 17 boundaries and three sixes in his 143-ball innings.

Duckett’s knock featured a crucial 158-run partnership with Joe Root, who scored 68, and a later 61-run stand with skipper Jos Buttler, who contributed 23 off 21 balls.

England struggled early on, losing two wickets for 43 in the powerplay, but Duckett’s composure stabilized the innings.

After Duckett’s dismissal in the 48th over, Jofra Archer added a quick 21 not out off 10 balls, helping England reach their final total.

Australia’s bowling attack, missing key pacers due to injuries, was led by left-arm pacer Ben Dwarshuis and Nathan Ellis, who worked hard to contain the score.

In response, Australia’s successful chase was built around Inglis’ unbeaten 120, ensuring they chased down the target to claim the win.
