Lowest Total in Test – Australia Crush West Indies for 27 Runs; lowest Test total for 70 years

15 July, 2025 11:31

Australia completed a dominant 3-0 Test series victory over the West Indies after bowling out the hosts for a shocking 27 runs — the second-lowest total in Test cricket history — on day three of the third and final Test at Sabina Park, Jamaica.

Chasing a modest target of 204, the West Indies folded in under 16 overs, falling one run short of equalling New Zealand’s all-time lowest total of 26, recorded in 1955. The West Indies’ 27 is now their lowest Test score ever, with the previous worst being 47 against England in 2004.

Starc’s 100th Test – A Historic Performance

Mitchell Starc, playing in his 100th Test, delivered a career-defining spell. He ripped through the Windies’ top order, finishing with figures of 6 for 9 in 7.3 overs — including five wickets in just 15 balls, the fastest five-wicket haul in Test history. With this spell, Starc also became the fourth Australian to take 400 Test wickets, joining legends Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, and Nathan Lyon.

His victims included:

  • John Campbell (first ball)

  • Kevlon Anderson (LBW, ball 5)

  • Brandon King (bowled, ball 6)

  • Mikyle Louis (caught)

  • Shai Hope (bowled)

  • Jayden Seales (bowled to end the innings)

Boland’s Hat-trick Adds to Windies Collapse

Scott Boland added to the West Indies’ misery with a brilliant hat-trick in the 13th over. He dismissed:

  • Justin Greaves (top scorer with 11)

  • Shamar Joseph

  • Jomel Warrican

With this, Australia wrapped up a sensational victory, winning by 176 runs despite scoring only 121 in their second innings.

Score Summary

  • Australia 1st innings: 225 (Smith 48, Shamar Joseph 4-33)

  • West Indies 1st innings: 143 (Campbell 36, Boland 3-34)

  • Australia 2nd innings: 121 (Green 42, Alzarri Joseph 5-27)

  • West Indies 2nd innings: 27 all out (Starc 6-9, Boland 3-10)

Reactions

Roston Chase, West Indies captain: “It’s heartbreaking. We felt we had a chance, but again our batting let us down. This has been a pattern through the series. It’s very disappointing.”

Mitchell Starc, Player of the Match & Series: “It’s been a fantastic series. Tough batting conditions, but our bowling attack has been spot on. I’m proud to join the 400-wicket club and contribute to such a win.”

What’s Next?

The action continues as Australia and West Indies now turn to T20 cricket, with a five-match T20I series beginning July 21, 2025, also in Jamaica.
