Tom Lynagh to Make Surprise Start Against Lions in Brisbane Test

18 July, 2025 12:56

Tom Lynagh, the son of Wallabies legend Michael Lynagh, will make his first Test start for Australia this Saturday, July 19, against the British and Irish Lions at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. This bold move by head coach Joe Schmidt has shocked many in the rugby world. The 22-year-old fly half has just one hour of international experience and hasn’t played since suffering a concussion on June 6.

Schmidt’s decision comes after a series of setbacks. Noah Lolesio is out with an injury, while Carter Gordon has switched to rugby league. Ben Donaldson and veteran James O’Connor were seen as safer options, but Schmidt is taking a gamble on youth and legacy.

Tom’s father, Michael Lynagh, famously led the Wallabies to a win over the Lions in 1989. Now, 36 years later, Tom will try to follow in his father’s footsteps. He was born in Italy and raised in England, where he played for Richmond RFC and Harlequins academy. At 17, he moved to Queensland to chase his Wallabies dream.

Despite limited game time and no lead-up matches, Schmidt believes Lynagh is ready. “He’s got a quiet confidence,” said Schmidt. “He’s brave, has a good kicking game, and knows this stadium well. It’s not ideal, but if not now, when?”

Lynagh will partner with Jake Gordon at scrum half. Tate McDermott, who plays alongside Lynagh at the Reds, is on the bench. In the backs, Len Ikitau and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii will provide support. The team is also missing key forwards like Rob Valetini and Will Skelton due to injury.

Australia needs a fast start in this series. All eyes will be on Tom Lynagh as he steps into the spotlight with history, pressure, and hope on his shoulders.
