Why Foreign Players Are Choosing PSL Over IPL

13 December, 2025 16:08

Former England all-rounder David Willey says the “sense of stability and assured opportunities” in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is increasingly attracting foreign players away from the Indian Premier League (IPL).

According to Willey, the PSL’s smaller size works in its favor, as it often guarantees regular match involvement for overseas players. In comparison, the IPL’s larger squads can leave even star players sitting on the bench for weeks.

His comments come after several international stars chose the PSL over the IPL. Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis and ex-England all-rounder Moeen Ali have both confirmed they will skip the IPL to play in Pakistan’s top T20 league. Australian power-hitter Glenn Maxwell, a regular in the IPL, has also decided not to enter the IPL auction and is reportedly considering a return to the PSL.

Speaking to reporters, Willey said player choices vary, but uncertainty around the IPL auction is a major factor. Many players value the predictability the PSL offers, especially in terms of selection and playing time.

“You never really know how the IPL auction will unfold,” Willey said. “With the PSL, there’s often more clarity and reassurance for players. Depending on personal circumstances, some feel they’re more likely to actually get on the field in the PSL rather than spend 10 or 11 weeks on the sidelines, and that can be a big deciding factor.”
