Ashes Remain in Australia as 4–1 Series Win Marks Emotional Farewell for Usman Khawaja

Australia completed a dominant 4–1 Ashes series victory over England after winning the fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) by six wickets on Thursday. The final win came shortly after lunch on day five and was made even more special as veteran opener Usman Khawaja played his last international match.

Chasing a target of 160 runs, Australia resumed the final day at 71 for 2 and reached 161 for 5 with little trouble. The result confirmed Australia’s clear control of the series. They had already retained the Ashes after taking a 3–0 lead earlier, with England managing just one consolation win in the fourth Test.

The match ended with emotional scenes as Usman Khawaja, aged 39, walked off the field for the final time. Playing at the same ground where he made his Test debut in 2011, Khawaja received a long standing ovation from the home crowd. His teammates formed a guard of honour as he left the field.

Speaking after the match, Khawaja said it was a dream ending to his career. He described it as a privilege to finish at the SCG with an Ashes win in front of his home supporters. He added that the team would always hold a special place in his heart.

England showed resistance in the final Test. They posted 384 runs in their first innings, led by a brilliant maiden Test century from Jacob Bethell. The 22-year-old scored 154 runs, giving England hope and setting Australia a competitive target. However, Australia’s calm batting and experience proved too strong.

Australian captain Pat Cummins praised his side’s consistency throughout the summer. He said winning an Ashes series 4–1 was a huge achievement and called Khawaja a key leader and dependable player for the team.

England captain Ben Stokes admitted Australia were the better side but said his team would take positives from the tour. He praised young players like Bethell and said England would learn from the experience.

Usman Khawaja finishes his career with 88 Test matches, leaving behind a legacy of elegance, resilience, and leadership. His retirement closes an important chapter in Australian cricket, as the team celebrates yet another Ashes triumph at home.
