Who is Imran Hamid Khwaja? Jay Shah-led ICC asks to convince Pakistan to play India at T20 World Cup 2026
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reportedly expressed concern after Pakistan announced it would not face India in the T20 World Cup group stage, creating uncertainty around one of the tournament’s most anticipated fixtures.
Pakistan’s decision has placed the ICC under pressure, prompting the global cricket body to explore ways to convince the team to reconsider, according to Indian media reports.
Sources revealed that the ICC plans to initiate backchannel discussions with Pakistan, assigning ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khwaja to handle the matter. Representing the Singapore Cricket Association, Khwaja is expected to engage with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to encourage participation in the high-profile match. Indian media reported that Khwaja has been asked to act as a “peacemaker” in the current situation.
It may be recalled that the Government of Pakistan officially announced on Sunday, February 15, that the national team would not take part in the T20 World Cup match against India. Reports further noted that the PCB has yet to complete the formal process of notifying the ICC through its official channels.
The T20 World Cup clash between Pakistan and India remains one of the most eagerly awaited matches in global cricket, and the ICC’s efforts to mediate underscore the significance of the fixture for fans and the sport alike.
