T20 World Cup 2026; Pakistan–India Match Decision Likely Within 48 Hours

09 February, 2026 10:25

A final decision on the highly anticipated Pakistan–India cricket match is expected within the next 24 to 48 hours, according to sources familiar with the ongoing discussions.

Officials say talks have entered a crucial stage, with stakeholders moving closer to a mutually acceptable solution. Multiple proposals are currently under review to resolve concerns related to tournament scheduling and participation.

PCB Playing Key Mediation Role

Sources revealed that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is actively acting as a mediator between the concerned parties. The PCB has maintained regular contact with cricket boards to help narrow differences and keep negotiations on track.

One of the major issues involves concerns raised by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) regarding its treatment within the broader framework of the tournament. These concerns are being considered as part of the proposed formula.

ICC Official Seeks Final Approval

ICC official Imran Khawaja has reportedly travelled to obtain final approval for the proposed recommendations. Once approval is secured, formal communication between the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the cricket boards is expected to resume.

Meanwhile, the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board is also expected to brief his government on the latest developments before a final stance is taken.

After consensus is reached, sources say the PCB will consult the Pakistani government for guidance and clearance. This step will be crucial before any final announcement is made.

India Confirms Travel to Colombo

Despite uncertainty, India captain Suryakumar Yadav has confirmed that the Indian men’s T20 team will travel to Colombo for the scheduled match against Pakistan.

Speaking at a pre-tournament press conference in Mumbai, Yadav said India would strictly follow the ICC schedule and regulations. He added that the team’s travel plans are unchanged and flights to Sri Lanka have already been booked.

The Pakistan–India match is scheduled for February 15 and is considered one of the biggest fixtures of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

What Happens If Pakistan Do Not Play

Pakistan has earlier announced it will not play against India, creating uncertainty in the group-stage structure. Under ICC rules, if Pakistan fail to take the field, India must still report to the stadium.

Sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said the Indian team will attend training, the pre-match press conference, and arrive at the venue on time. If Pakistan do not appear, the match referee will officially declare the match abandoned or forfeited.

In that case, India could be awarded two points as per ICC regulations.

Tournament Context

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup began on February 7. Pakistan are placed in a group with India, Namibia, the Netherlands, and the United States. The Pakistan–India match was expected to be the marquee clash of the group stage.
