Umpire Killed in Bee Attack During Cricket Match in India

21 February, 2026 05:31

During an under-13 cricket tournament in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, a cricket umpire was killed after he and several others were assaulted by an unexpected swarm of bees, leaving numerous others hurt and hospitalized.

Manik Gupta, a 65-year-old victim who was a member of the Kanpur Cricket Association, was attacked by a swarm of bees as he was officiating at a nearby stadium in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Players and onlookers fled for their lives in the midst of the commotion.

Manik Gupta was first transported to a local hospital after suffering severe injuries. He was eventually transferred to a state-of-the-art medical institution, where physicians declared him dead due to the severity of his condition.

Along with a number of other victims who required medical attention, another umpire, Jagdish Sharma, was also hurt but is reportedly safe.

Gupta had officiated numerous noteworthy regional matches throughout his nearly three decades with the Kanpur Cricket Association.

The situation is reminiscent of a similar occurrence that occurred in 2019 when bees attacked players and fans during a one-day match between India A and England Lions in Thiruvananthapuram. In that previous event, no fatalities were reported.

Following Pakistan’s concession and decision to play India in the T20 World Cup, which reignited cricket’s most lucrative match, excitement was in full swing in Colombo and throughout South Asia on Friday.
