Sri Lankan Buddhist monks meet President Dr Arif Alvi in Islamabad today (Wednesday).

President Arif Alvi said people to people contacts and religious tourism provide excellent platforms to further expand bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

He made these remarks while talking to the delegation of Sri Lankan Buddhist monks.

The President said Pakistan houses the Gandhara Buddhist heritage.

He noted Pakistan a proud custodian of some of the most sacred relics of Buddha. That offers great potential for promoting religious tourism from Sri Lanka to Pakistan.

He asked the delegation to encourage the monks and people of Sri Lanka to visit the Buddhist religious sites in Pakistan.

Because it has far greater number of Buddhist artefacts than any other country in the world.

Moreover, President said Pakistan considers Sri Lanka as a special partner and friend.

Besides, Pakistan wants to further improve bilateral cooperation with it.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan delegation appreciated the measures taken by Pakistani government for the renovation and preservation of Buddhist heritage sites.

On Tuesday, senior Sri Lankan Buddhist monks visited Badshahi Mosque and Lahore Fort..

They are visiting Pakistan as a part of a delegation comprising senior Buddhist Monks.

Chief Abbot and President, Dharma Vijaya Buddhist Vihara, USA Venerated Dr. Walpola Piyananda seems to lead the delegation.

Meanwhile, he spoke on the occasion. He said that every religion has given a message of peace and harmony.

He further said that Pakistan has always helped Sri Lanka in the hour of need.

The veteran monk also referred to Pakistan’s assistance towards counter-terrorism measures.
