Two big asteroids making close approach to Earth today, warns NASA

16 December, 2024 11:30

NASA said two very large asteroids 2024 XY5 and 2024 XB6 will pass close to Earth today.

The space agency has confirmed that these asteroids pose no threat, but it does highlight the importance of keeping track of close-passing asteroids.

Asteroid 2024 XY5, measuring 71 feet, will approach the Earth at 12:26 p.m today, traveling at 10,805 miles per hour. It will cover about 2,180,000 miles.

While the second asteroid, 2024 XB6, which is slightly smaller than 2024 XY5 and has a diameter of 56 feet, will pass by the Earth at an extraordinary speed of 14,780 miles per hour. Its closest approach to Earth would be about 4,150,000, so it poses no threat to the Earth either.

It should be noted that such asteroids are remnants of the formation of the early solar system, which formed about 4.6 billion years ago.
