Scientists create artificial ‘super diamond’
Chinese scientists have created a magnetic ‘super diamond’ that is stronger than real diamonds.
Natural diamonds usually have a cubic frame (the arrangement of diamond carbon atoms), but the shash facet crystal template is known to supply a strong material.
However, the application of such a hexagonal diamond (HD), also known as Lons Delete, was still largely unknown due to its low transparency and extremely small size, the researchers said.
Earlier, the hardest diamonds were found in places where asteroids or meteorites fell.
For example, The Lons Delete was first discovered in 1967 at the Canyon Diblometrite in Arizona.
A new study recently published in the journal Nature Materials describes the process of heating highly compressed graphite into ‘Well-Crystallized, Nearly Pure HD’.
Researchers from Jilin University in China, led by Liaon Bing Bing and Yao Mangang, said in the study that HD can be made through a ‘post-graphite phase’.
