‘City killer’ asteroid now has 3.1pc chance of hitting Earth
NASA has said that an asteroid that could level a city now has a 3.1 per cent chance of striking Earth in 2032.
According to NASA data, the event will be the most threatening space rock ever recorded by modern forecasting.
Experts said, despite the rising odds, there’s no need for alarm.
The astronomical community has been closely monitoring the situation. The James Webb Space Telescope will fix its gaze on the object, known as 2024 YR4, next month.
On December 27 last year, 2024 YR4 was first detected by the El Sauce Observatory in Chile.
As per the estimates of astronomers, asteroids’ size will be 130 to 300 feet (40-90 meters) wide.
On January 29, the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN), had issued a warning memo after the impact probability had crossed one per cent.
The latest calculations of NASA’s now estimate the impact probability at 3.1 per cent.
In 2004, an asteroid – Apophis – greater than 30 meters in size posed such a significant risk of striking Earth in 2029. It was later ruled out by additional observations.
