The riskiest asteroid on record has now almost zero chance of hitting Earth

26 February, 2025 11:01

The chances of asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting Earth have dropped from 3.1 to about zero per cent in 2032.

Nasa has revealed that the chances of this asteroid hitting earth in December 2032 have reduced by 0.0017 per cent.

On the other hand, the European Space Agency has also put a similar risk probability at 0.002 per cent.

According to Nasa, there is a 99.9983 per cent chance that the asteroid will safely pass through Earth in seven years, which is equivalent to 1 in 59,000 chances of colliding.

Although new data shows that the asteroid has a 1.7 per cent chance of colliding with the Moon, the Earth is not threatened by such effects.

The agency also said that when the asteroid 2024 YR4 was first discovered, it was likely to hit Earth in 2032.

But as observations of the asteroid continued to be presented, NASA experts were able to calculate more accurate models of its speed and now they have realized that there is no significant risk of this asteroid hitting our planet.
