World sea levels continue to rise more than expected

16 March, 2025 14:16

A new NASA analysis shows that world sea levels have risen faster and in larger amounts than expected in 2024, mostly due to warmer water temperatures.

The study found that the data shows that sea levels have risen at an expansion rate of .23 inches last year which is higher than the expected .17 inches.

Josh Willis, a sea level researcher at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, said in a news release that each year is slightly different from before, but what is clear is that the ocean continues to grow and the rate of increase is getting faster and faster.

Historically, about two-thirds of sea level rise is the result of melting of ice sheets and glaciers as well as the increase in water from land to the oceans, while the third is thermal expansion, the study said.

NASA said that the increase in Earth’s heat is mainly due to the accumulation of heat-absorbing greenhouse gases and 90 percent of this absorbed heat is absorbed in the oceans. When this heat is absorbed, the temperature of the ocean increases and the water expands.
