Facebook banned to block hate content

26 March, 2025 11:30

The Papua New Guinea government has blocked Facebook on a “trial” basis to stop hate content.

The government issued a clarification statement, saying the move was a “test” aimed at curbing misinformation, hate speech and pornography.

The shutdown against Facebook under the country’s anti-terrorism laws began on Monday. Authorities have not confirmed when the temporary ban will be lifted.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism from opposition lawmakers, media groups and business leaders, who say it undermines freedom of expression and disrupts economic activity.

Police Minister Peter Tsamaeli said the government was not trying to suppress freedom of expression, but wanted to ensure the “responsible use” of social media.
