ChatGPT’s free AI image tool delayed due to high demand

27 March, 2025 17:19

In a bit of disappointing news for AI fans, OpenAI has delayed the launch of its new image-generation feature for free users of ChatGPT. The reason? It became way more popular than expected.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, shared that the feature saw an overwhelming number of users shortly after being introduced, leading the company to temporarily hold back its release for those on the free plan.

The powerful image generation is powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o model, which can create highly detailed and realistic pictures. However, for now, only users who are paying for ChatGPT—such as those subscribed to the Plus, Pro, or Team plans—can use it.

OpenAI hasn’t said exactly when free users will be able to access this tool.

One cool thing about this feature is how it works: it builds images step by step, from top to bottom and left to right, to give them a more realistic look.

While free users can’t try this new feature just yet, they can still use OpenAI’s DALL·E tool to create AI images in the meantime.
