Is Bluesky Down? Bluesky Faces Major Outage

Bluesky, a social media platform seen as an alternative to X (formerly Twitter), faced a major outage on Tuesday morning. Users started reporting problems around 6 a.m. ET. Over 1,000 complaints were logged on Downdetector, a website that tracks service disruptions.
What is Bluesky?
Bluesky is a social media app built to give users more control. It is not run by a single company, making it “decentralized.” The app, supported by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, focuses on free speech and lets users turn off automated content sorting. It grew quickly due to its invite-only system, attracting people tired of crowded or algorithm-heavy platforms like X.
Why This Outage Matters
Bluesky has over 35 million users globally. Outages like this could hurt trust in newer platforms competing with giants like X. Users need reliable service, especially when platforms are still growing.
What Happened?
Both Bluesky’s app and website stopped working properly. Users worldwide couldn’t load their feeds or post updates. One user from the UK said, “The website failed to load. This happened a few weeks ago around midnight too.” The issue seems to be widespread, but Bluesky hasn’t publicly explained the cause or fixed the problem yet. Newsweek contacted Bluesky for details but hasn’t received a response.
