Google has announced a massive effort to block harmful apps from the Android Play Store.
The tech giant revealed it banned 2.36 million apps in 2024 that broke its safety rules. These apps were designed to steal personal data, spy on users, or scam victims. Google also blocked 158,000 developer accounts linked to these dangerous apps.
The company warned Android users to check their Play Protect settings immediately. This free feature scans apps for threats and removes harmful ones. Suzanne Frey, a Google executive, said, “We work hard to stop bad apps before they harm users.”
How Play Protect Works
Play Protect runs daily checks on all apps installed on Android devices. It can detect malware, phishing attempts, or apps that demand unfair permissions. To activate it:
Open the Google Play Store app.
Tap your Profile icon > Play Protect > Settings.
Turn on Scan Apps With Play Protect.
Google also added a new AI-powered tool to Play Protect. Menaka Shroff, another Google official, explained, “The AI checks how apps use sensitive permissions in real-time. If something looks risky, we warn users or delete the app.”
Why This Matters
Cybercriminals often hide malicious apps in the Play Store. These apps might look normal but can lock your phone, drain your bank account, or spy on you. Google says Play Protect now scans 200 billion apps daily worldwide. It even found 13 million harmful apps outside the Play Store in 2024.
Extra Safety Tips
Update Your Phone: Install the latest Android security patches.
Avoid Third-Party Apps: Only download apps from trusted sources like the Play Store.
Check Permissions: If an app asks for access to your contacts or camera without a clear reason, avoid it.
Recent Upgrades
Google recently improved Play Protect to scan apps downloaded from other websites or stores. Users can enable this by turning on Improve Harmful App Detection in Play Protect settings. The AI upgrade helps spot fake apps pretending to be banks, social media, or shopping platforms.
What’s Next?
Google vows to keep fighting malicious apps. The company also warned iPhone users to review their security settings, as scams target all devices.
