Mexican president files lawsuit against Google for changing Gulf of Mexico’s name

11 May, 2025 09:15

President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum has initiated legal action against Google for changing the name of the ‘Gulf of Mexico.’

Under an executive order by US President Donald Trump, the name ‘Gulf of Mexico’ has been changed to ‘Gulf of America’ on Google Maps for US users.

Mexican President Claudia has termed this change a violation of Mexico’s sovereignty and international borders.

She argues that while the US can change names within its coastal boundaries, changing the name of the entire Gulf is against international laws.

She has demanded that Google only use the name ‘Gulf of America’ within U.S. borders while retaining the original name ‘Gulf of Mexico’ in areas of Mexico and Cuba. A civil court in Mexico City has initially ordered Google to restore the name ‘Gulf of Mexico’ in Mexico and Cuba.

However, Google has denied any changes to its policy, stating that it uses names according to local preferences in different areas.
