WhatsApp Rolls Out New Audio Hangouts Feature for Group Chats – But Not Everyone is Happy

WhatsApp adds ANOTHER new button in major change for group chats – and people fear it could start arguments
WhatsApp users are reacting to a major new update. The popular messaging app has now launched a feature called “Audio Hangouts” for all group chats. This change was announced by Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg, and it allows users to start voice chats without calling anyone.
The tool was previously available for large groups only. But now, any WhatsApp group – big or small – can use it.
What Is Audio Hangouts?
Audio Hangouts is a drop-in voice chat feature. Unlike regular calls, it doesn’t ring your phone. Instead, the chat sits at the bottom of the group. Any member can join or leave at any time, just like a live conversation.
According to Meta: “Whether it’s a big sports match, a TV finale or breaking news, you can now talk it out live with your group – anytime you want.”
How To Use Audio Hangouts
To start a voice chat:
Go into your WhatsApp group.
Swipe up and hold to start an Audio Hangout.
The chat will appear at the bottom of your screen, and others can join.
There’s no ringing or alerts. It’s meant to be less disruptive than normal calls.
Users Are Divided
While some users welcome the feature, others are already looking for ways to turn it off.
One user posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Is there a way to disable the voice chat?”
Another joked: “Group debates just went from silent rage to loud chaos.”
Not everyone is against it, though.
“Group chats just leveled up. Why text-fight when you can talk it out live?” a third user wrote.
Other Changes and Backlash
This is not the first update from WhatsApp that has caused mixed feelings. Recently, Meta added a new AI chatbot button to the app’s menu — and users can’t remove it.
Also, some older phones are now blocked from using WhatsApp. From May 5, only iPhones running iOS 15.1 or later are supported. This means models like:
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus
can no longer use the app.
Opinion: Is WhatsApp Becoming Too Complicated?
Many people now say WhatsApp is turning into Facebook Lite, with features like communities, statuses, and AI bots. A tech editor from The Sun wrote: “WhatsApp used to be simple. Now it’s full of stuff we never asked for. We just want a clean, easy-to-use chat app.”
