How to Start Voice Chat in WhatsApp Group – Step-by-Step

02 June, 2025 18:32

Ever felt annoyed by non-stop ringing during WhatsApp group calls or missed them altogether because you were busy? WhatsApp has now introduced a new, quieter, and more flexible way to stay connected with your groups. The newly launched Voice Chat feature allows group members to start or join audio chats without disruptive notifications, making communication smoother than ever.

“Voice Chat enables group members to communicate directly with each other within the chat, eliminating the need to listen to sound alerts. Instead, a gentle pop-up appears for users, allowing them to join or not as they prefer.”

How to Start a Voice Chat in a WhatsApp Group

To begin using this feature:

  • Open WhatsApp and select a group chat.

  • Hold and swipe up from the bottom of the screen until the voice chat box appears.

  • Tap Connect or simply release to initiate the chat.

Once started, other members will receive a subtle notification, and they can choose to join without any ringtone interruption.

How to Notify Someone in a WhatsApp Voice Chat

By default, all participants are notified silently. But if you want to alert someone specifically, use these methods:

Method 1: Via Chat Thread

  • Start a voice chat and tap the banner.

  • Click the people icon and tap the ring icon next to the name of the person you want to notify.

Method 2: Via the Call Section

  • Begin a voice chat.

  • Navigate to the Calls tab, select the ongoing chat, tap the people icon, and then tap the ring icon for the chosen participant.

How to Send a Wave in a WhatsApp Voice Chat

Don’t want to ring someone directly? You can send a wave:

  • Join or start a voice chat.

  • Tap the voice chat banner and choose Send a wave.
This sends a text notification to group members about the active chat.

The new system is a game-changer for WhatsApp users who rely on group communication. Now, staying in touch with groups is easier, quieter, and more user-friendly than ever before.
