How will older smartphone users affected by WhatsApp’s update?

WhatsApp launching new paid ad features for advertisers
If you’re using an old phone, you may no longer be able to use WhatsApp. Starting June 1, 2025, WhatsApp has officially stopped working on several older iPhones and Android phones.
Which Phones Are Affected?
WhatsApp now only works on:
iPhones running iOS 15.1 or newer
Android phones running Android 5 or newer
This means users with phones made before 2014 can no longer use WhatsApp. The app has stopped working on devices like:
iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, iPhone 6X
Samsung Galaxy S3
HTC One X
Sony Xperia Z
Some people thought WhatsApp would also stop working on iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, and the first iPhone SE, but these still support iOS 15.8.4. So, WhatsApp will likely keep working on them for another year or two.
Why This Is Happening
WhatsApp regularly updates its features and privacy tools to match the latest mobile operating systems. That’s why it stops supporting older phones — they simply can’t keep up with the new updates or don’t have the needed security features.
The company said it reviews older devices every year and stops support for those with very few users or outdated software.
What Should You Do?
If you’re using an old phone and WhatsApp no longer works, the only solution is to upgrade to a newer device that supports the required software version.
Most users with newer phones are not affected by this change, but it’s a good reminder to keep your device and apps up to date.
