What is ‘Liquid Glass’ User Interface? Apple to Unveil Major Feature in iPhones

09 June, 2025 09:52

Apple is set to unveil a sweeping user interface overhaul dubbed “Liquid Glass,” marking the company’s most significant design update since iOS 7.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the redesign will be showcased at WWDC 2025, which kicks off today at 1 PM ET / 10 AM PT.

A New Visual Language

The “Liquid Glass” design language will introduce a sleek, translucent aesthetic across Apple’s platforms. The updated interface will feature shiny, see-through visuals reminiscent of glass, with enhanced transparency and reflective effects in toolbars, app elements, and system controls.

While largely cosmetic, the changes represent a bold visual shift and align with Apple’s broader strategy of modernizing its ecosystem’s look and feel.

First Major UI Overhaul Since iOS 7

This will be Apple’s most dramatic UI refresh since 2013’s iOS 7, when the company moved away from skeuomorphism toward a flat, minimalist design. The introduction of Liquid Glass signals a new era in Apple’s design philosophy.

Ecosystem-Wide Rollout

Liquid Glass is expected to span the full range of Apple operating systems, including:

  • iOS 26

  • macOS

  • iPadOS

  • watchOS

  • tvOS

The design is also said to draw inspiration from the Apple Vision Pro, aiming to create a more unified and immersive user experience across devices.

Looking Ahead to iPhone’s 20th Anniversary

The Liquid Glass redesign may coincide with the release of a special 20th anniversary iPhone next year. Rumored features of the commemorative device include:

  • Curved glass wrapping around all sides and edges

  • Ultra-thin bezels

  • A seamless display with no notches or cutouts

These hardware innovations are expected to complement the new UI direction, further enhancing the immersive, glass-like aesthetic Apple is pursuing.

Apple’s WWDC 2025 presentation will offer the first official look at the Liquid Glass interface, setting the stage for a new chapter in Apple’s user experience design.
