WhatsApp is working on a new feature for its Android app that gives users more control over the quality of photos and videos downloaded automatically. The feature is currently being tested with some users in the beta version 2.25.18.11.
The new setting, called Auto-download quality, can be found under:
Settings > Storage and data > Auto-download quality
Users will be able to choose between:
Standard quality – smaller file size, faster download, uses less space
HD quality – better resolution, but uses more data and storage
If set to standard, WhatsApp will download the compressed version of media files. However, users can still manually view or download the HD version if needed. This builds on WhatsApp’s dual-upload feature, where both standard and HD versions are uploaded to servers.
Currently available to select Android beta testers, the feature is expected to roll out to more users soon. A similar feature for iPhone users is also being tested but hasn’t been launched yet.
