Apple is leveling up the messaging experience in iOS 26, with the Messages app receiving some of the most anticipated upgrades yet. According to tech analyst Mark Gurman, the new features will introduce greater interaction and customization in iMessage — with the ability to create polls and set personalized chat backgrounds.
“Users can now expect more interaction and customization in iMessage chats — including poll creation and custom background images.”
Create Polls in iMessage
iPhone users will be able to initiate polls directly in chat threads. Whether it’s deciding on dinner spots or choosing a weekend movie, users can now ask questions and allow participants to vote instantly. Poll results will be visible in real-time within the chat, making group decisions seamless.
Set a Background Image in Chats
Another visual update allows users to customize chat windows with background images. This can be done using Apple’s preset wallpapers or by uploading a personal photo. The feature adds a new layer of personalization to your conversations.
Apple has traditionally kept iMessage sleek and minimal, but the competition from WhatsApp and Telegram pushed the company toward more interactive tools. The new enhancements aim to boost user engagement and make chats more dynamic.
“Group planning becomes easier (thanks to polls)” and “Chats feel more personal (with custom backgrounds).”
The features will be available with the iOS 26 update expected in September 2025, following the June announcement. Compatible devices are likely to include iPhone 13 and newer models. Users won’t need to update iMessage separately, as the features will be bundled with the iOS 26 update.
