PTA warns users about WhatsApp scams in Pakistan

21 July, 2025 18:27

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has alerted the public about a rise in scams happening through WhatsApp messages. These scams have led to cases of account hacking and personal data theft.

According to PTA, people are receiving suspicious messages from both local and international numbers. These messages often use the WhatsApp logo and include a clickable link. Some even falsely warn users that their WhatsApp account will be closed or needs verification.

The PTA has strongly advised users not to click on any such links or respond to these messages, as they are part of a phishing scheme designed to steal personal data and take control of WhatsApp accounts.

“The messages are part of a broader phishing scheme aimed at compromising the security of mobile users across Pakistan,” PTA added.

PTA reminded users that WhatsApp will never ask for sensitive information or send verification requests through unofficial links. Users are encouraged to stay alert and report any suspicious activity.
