Google Translate Adds AI Tools for Language Learning

27 August, 2025 01:24

Google has introduced two major AI-powered updates in its Translate app, making it more useful for people who want to learn languages and talk with others in real time.

The first update is a new Practice feature, which creates speaking and listening activities tailored to the user’s level and goals. Learners can select their skill level and choose scenarios like travel, school, or daily conversation. The app then gives listening tasks, where users tap the words they hear, and speaking drills with feedback on pronunciation and fluency. Daily progress tracking is also included. At launch, the beta version supports English speakers learning Spanish and French, and Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers learning English.

The second update is an upgraded Live Translate. It now uses Gemini AI models with advanced voice recognition to enable smooth back-and-forth audio conversations. Users simply tap “Live Translate” and speak, while the app translates out loud and shows transcripts in both languages. The system also detects pauses and intonation to make conversations flow naturally. This feature is first available in the United States, India, and Mexico, supporting over 70 languages.

Google says these features are designed for travelers, students, and language learners. The company noted that one-third of Translate users already use the app to study languages, which is why it chose to build learning tools inside Translate instead of launching a separate app.

The updates rely on improvements in AI, speech recognition, and text-to-speech technology, helping to make translations faster and more accurate. However, users are advised to check privacy settings and be cautious when using Live Translate with transcripts in public areas.

With these additions, Google Translate is now competing directly with standalone language learning apps while also keeping its role as one of the world’s most popular translation tools.
