Fastest Internet in the World: Japan Breaks Record

06 September, 2025 17:51

Japan has shattered global internet speed records by achieving a groundbreaking data transfer rate of 1.02 petabits per second (Pbps), marking a significant leap in communication technology.

The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan reached this astonishing speed, which is powerful enough to download a 100GB file in just a fraction of a millisecond. To put this into perspective, the record-breaking speed is nearly four million times faster than the average internet speed available in the United States.

Researchers involved in this project demonstrated that extremely high-speed internet can be achieved over long distances using existing infrastructure. The experiment, conducted by NICT’s Photonic Network Laboratory in collaboration with Sumitomo Electric and European researchers, aimed to address the increasing global data traffic and future internet demands.

During the experiment, signals were transmitted through 19 fiber optic loops, each 86.1 kilometers long, repeated 21 times—covering a total transmission distance of 1,808 kilometers. The setup allowed for the simultaneous transfer of 180 distinct data streams, reaching a total data volume of 1.86 exabits per second per kilometer—the highest ever recorded.

This technological achievement paves the way for ultra-fast internet that could revolutionize everything from streaming and cloud computing to next-generation telecommunications and data centers.

Meanwhile, reports have surfaced about possible internet disruptions in Pakistan, raising concerns over regional connectivity as global benchmarks in speed continue to soar.
