Spotify finally launches Lossless audio for Premium users

11 September, 2025 19:52

Music fans have finally received the news they’ve been waiting for – Spotify has launched Lossless audio, a feature that lets users enjoy music in much higher quality.

Normally, songs on streaming platforms are compressed to reduce file size. This process removes some original sound details like depth, dynamic range, and subtle overtones. But with the new Lossless feature, Spotify says users can now listen to music exactly as it was recorded, without losing any quality.

Jack Mason, a producer at Spotify Studios, explained it simply: “Lossless means there’s no difference between what artists deliver and what listeners hear.”

The update is being rolled out to Premium subscribers in more than 50 countries, including the UK, US, Germany, Japan, and Australia. Most users will get access through October, and Spotify will send a notification once it’s available.

Spotify recommends using wired headphones or speakers for the best experience, as Bluetooth doesn’t have enough bandwidth to handle large lossless files. It’s also better to stream over WiFi, since the high-quality files use more data and storage space.

Both Apple Music and Amazon Music already offer lossless streaming, but Spotify has been working on this update since 2017 and is only now bringing it to users.

Once available, enabling the feature is simple:

  1. Open the Spotify app and tap your profile icon.

  2. Go to Settings.

  3. Select Media Quality.

  4. Choose Lossless for WiFi, mobile data, or downloads.

Almost every song in Spotify’s library will support this new format, giving music lovers a completely new listening experience.
