WhatsApp’s New Feature Lets You Chat Without Sharing Numbers
Until now, WhatsApp accounts have been tied directly to users’ phone numbers. However, growing concerns about privacy have led many users to demand a system similar to Facebook and Twitter, where usernames can be used instead of phone numbers — and Meta appears to be responding.
According to recent reports, WhatsApp is in the process of introducing username support, which has sparked excitement among social media users.
Although the feature is not yet available — not even in beta — the development of a username reservation system indicates the company is actively working toward its release.
As per a report from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has taken a significant step by adding a new link in the app’s settings that will allow users to reserve a username in advance. This move suggests the feature could roll out sooner than expected.
It is important to note that Meta has not officially confirmed the feature yet. Still, once launched, it would allow users to communicate on WhatsApp without having to share their phone numbers.
Earlier reports also suggest that once a user sets a username, their phone number will remain hidden from others, enhancing privacy and user safety.
This change is expected to fundamentally transform how people connect on WhatsApp. With username support, users will be able to interact with friends, family, and contacts using their chosen usernames, rather than disclosing personal phone numbers.
