ChatGPT and Perplexity down after Amazon Web Services outage

20 October, 2025 14:50

A major Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage has caused several popular apps to go offline, including ChatGPT and Perplexity.

AWS reported “increased error rates and latencies” in its US-EAST-1 region, but the issue quickly spread around the world. According to The Verge, users on Reddit said Alexa had stopped responding, with alarms and routines not working. Other services using AWS — such as Perplexity, Airtable, and the McDonald’s app — were also affected.

The exact cause of the problem is still unknown, and AWS has not given a timeline for when normal operations will resume. Popular platforms like Snapchat, Roblox, and Fortnite were also reported to be down.

Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that the app was inaccessible and that their team was working to fix the issue.

This isn’t the first time users have faced such disruptions. Earlier in October, thousands of users around the world were unable to access ChatGPT after a global outage hit OpenAI’s chatbot. According to Downdetector, more than 700 users reported that both the web and mobile versions of ChatGPT were unresponsive.

The outage affected users in India, the US, the UK, and Australia. At that time, OpenAI had not officially acknowledged the issue, and its status page stated, “We’re not aware of any issues affecting our systems.”
