OpenAI Plans to Add Music-Making Feature to ChatGPT
OpenAI is reportedly venturing into the next phase of generative AI with a project focused on creating original music. According to a reports, the company is developing a tool that can produce music using both text and audio prompts, potentially allowing users to generate complete compositions with minimal input.
As part of its early research efforts, OpenAI has reportedly collaborated with students from The Juilliard School — one of the world’s leading performing arts institutions — to develop high-quality training data for the model. Sources familiar with the project told that OpenAI aims to create a system capable of producing everything from guitar accompaniments and vocal backings to full soundtracks for videos.
While the current development stage remains undisclosed, one source revealed that Juilliard students were tasked with annotating musical scores to help the model better understand diverse musical structures, harmonies, and styles.
This project is not OpenAI’s first foray into AI-generated audio. The company has previously explored similar models, though none have reached the prominence of its existing text and image-generation tools. With this initiative, OpenAI is set to compete with emerging music-generation platforms such as Suno and ElevenLabs, both of which are pioneering AI-driven audio solutions.
As the field of AI-generated music expands, it also faces growing debates around originality, copyright, and content authenticity. Despite these challenges, experts suggest that the collaboration between artificial intelligence and human creativity marks only the beginning of a transformative era in digital art and music production.
