Amazon launches new cloud service in Europe to address data security
Amazon’s AWS has launched a new cloud service in Europe, aiming to address concerns about data security with US-based providers by offering a European alternative.
Speaking to Reuters, AWS Germany CTO Michael Hanisch said the new service, called the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, will allow operations even if the EU loses internet connectivity or if the US restricts software exports.
The data centres for this cloud are physically and legally separate from AWS’s other global servers. Many Europeans are seeking alternatives to US tech companies due to worries about legal access to their data by foreign authorities.
Other major US cloud providers, like Microsoft and Google, are also focusing on European data security. Microsoft keeps European customers’ data exclusively in Europe when requested, while Google invested 5.5 billion euros in German data centres last year.
AWS said the European cloud will include security controls, sovereignty assurances, and legal safeguards to meet European government and business requirements for sensitive data.
Hanisch added that the cloud will be operated and monitored by a German company, with a management and advisory board made up of EU citizens, and all employees will eventually be required to hold EU citizenship.
This move positions AWS as a trusted option for European businesses and governments that need secure, locally controlled cloud services.
