PlayStation 6 likely launch later than expected: Report

31 January, 2026 19:56

Industry experts now believe that PlayStation 6 may launch later than earlier expectations, with a possible release in 2028.

In the past, Sony usually released a new PlayStation console every six to seven years. Since the PlayStation 5 launched in 2020, many people expected the PS6 to arrive around 2026 or 2027. However, analysts say Sony may delay the next console due to smart business planning.

One major reason behind this delay is the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6), which is expected to launch on November 19, 2026. According to Ampere research director Piers Harding-Rolls, GTA 6 is likely to boost PS5 sales for several years. Because of this, Sony may want to focus on selling more PS5 units instead of launching new hardware too soon.

Analysts believe GTA 6 will be one of the biggest game releases ever, and Sony does not want to divide its player base during such an important period. Delaying the PS6 would allow the company to fully benefit from the game’s massive popularity.

Senior analyst David Gibson from MST Financial also shared a similar view. He said strong game sales on the PS5 are encouraging Sony to extend the console’s life. He added that Sony’s current earnings are performing better than expected.

With the PS5 still selling well and a major game launch ahead, there is less pressure for Sony to introduce a new console. More clarity is expected when Sony releases its official earnings report on February 5.
