Android phones can now function like PCs with new update

07 March, 2026 20:23

Google has officially released Android’s native desktop mode for Pixel devices as part of the March Pixel Drop. This new feature gives Android a proper desktop experience, something it has lacked until now. Since it is now part of core Android, other Android phones may get this feature in the future.

Starting With Pixel Phones

Desktop mode is currently available on Pixel 8 models and newer. To use it, a monitor must be connected via USB-C, and users can also pair a keyboard and mouse for easier navigation.

The mode allows a larger external display and better multitasking. Google has also added desktop windowing support for the Pixel Tablet, letting users resize and run multiple apps on the tablet screen. This same windowing works in desktop mode on supported Pixel phones.

AI and System Enhancements

The March Pixel Drop also expands Gemini AI features in beta, which can help with tasks like ordering food, booking rides, and making grocery lists.

Other updates include:

  • Comfort display filters using AI to reduce color brightness for easier viewing.

  • Circle to Search, which lets users identify clothing and try outfits virtually.

  • Now Playing app improvements to better track music listened to.

  • At a Glance widget now shows key information, including sports scores, on the lock screen.

  • New custom icons for personalization.

The rollout of these features may vary by device and region, but the update brings a major step forward in Android usability, especially for Pixel users.
