Samsung Exynos 2800 chip prioritizes stability and efficiency

28 March, 2026 18:35

Samsung is making big changes to its Exynos smartphone processors. After the groundbreaking Exynos 2600, the world’s first 2nm smartphone processor, the next chip, Exynos 2800, will focus more on stability, efficiency, and long-term reliability rather than pushing aggressive new technology.

The Exynos 2800 is expected to power the Galaxy S28 series in 2028. Samsung has decided to drop plans for a 1.4nm process and will use an upgraded 2nm (SF2P+) manufacturing process instead. This will help improve power efficiency, increase production yields, and make the chip more reliable.

Reports suggest Samsung is also working on its own GPU design and may revisit custom CPU cores. In the past, Samsung’s custom Mongoose cores were removed after poor performance, and the company relied on AMD’s RDNA-based GPUs and ARM CPU cores. Creating its own designs could improve optimization and lower manufacturing costs.

Exynos chips have often been criticized for lower performance, less efficiency, and heating issues compared to Snapdragon chips in the U.S. and China. If Samsung succeeds with the Exynos 2800, the improved 2nm process and in-house designs could help it compete better with Qualcomm and Apple.

However, there are risks. If Samsung repeats mistakes from the past with custom cores, it could face similar performance problems as with the Exynos 990, which powered the Galaxy S20 and Note 20 series in Europe.

Overall, Samsung is taking a cautious but practical approach with the Exynos 2800, aiming for reliable performance and better efficiency rather than chasing extreme innovation.
