NASA begins first crewed Moon mission in more than 50 years

02 April, 2026 16:04

NASA has successfully launched its first crewed mission to the Moon in more than half a century, marking a historic moment in space exploration. The mission, Artemis II, lifted off on April 1 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It carries four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the Moon and back to Earth.

This is the first human trip toward the Moon since the Apollo programme ended in 1972, highlighting renewed interest in deep space exploration. Unlike the Apollo missions, Artemis II will not land on the Moon. It is a test flight to check NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft under real crewed conditions.

The spacecraft will travel around 252,000 miles (406,000 km), the farthest humans have ever gone. The mission will test life support, navigation, and heat shielding, which are crucial for future Moon landings.

The Artemis II crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The mission is notable for its diversity: Koch will be the first woman, Glover the first Black astronaut, and Hansen the first non-American to go beyond low-Earth orbit.

The Artemis programme aims to establish a long-term human presence on the Moon and eventually send astronauts to Mars. The mission also comes amid growing space competition, with China planning its own crewed lunar missions.

If successful, Artemis II will pave the way for future lunar landings later this decade. The launch is seen as a major milestone after years of delays, budget issues, and technical challenges with the SLS rocket.

Reacting to the launch, US President Donald Trump said: “It’s amazing. They are on their way and God bless them, these are brave people. God bless those four unbelievable astronauts.”

As Artemis II begins its journey, the mission is expected to shape the future of human space exploration.
