WhatsApp introduces privacy-focused usernames

09 April, 2026 15:39

WhatsApp has started a gradual rollout of a username feature, allowing users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. Currently, it is available to a limited number of iOS and Android users.

People can choose unique usernames, follow specific rules, and optionally secure them with a four-digit key. This is one of WhatsApp’s biggest steps toward giving users more control over their personal information.

A Major Privacy Upgrade

The new usernames let users chat, call, and connect without revealing their phone numbers. Users can link their usernames with Instagram and Facebook handles, though using the same name could show connected profiles. The optional four-digit ‘username key’ ensures only those with both the username and the key can contact the user.

Rules to Prevent Misuse

Usernames must be 3–35 characters, include at least one letter, and can only have lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. They cannot start with ‘www.’ or end with domains like ‘.com’. Names already used on Instagram or Facebook need verification through Meta’s Accounts Center before being claimed on WhatsApp.

Phased Rollout

The feature is being rolled out slowly to maintain stability. Only a small group of iOS and Android users currently have access. Availability depends on app version and region. Users can check under Profile Settings if the option is visible. Others will get access in upcoming updates.

Impact on Messaging

With usernames, WhatsApp users no longer need to share phone numbers, similar to platforms like Telegram. This allows safer interactions with strangers or businesses while reducing spam. In the future, usernames may integrate further with Meta’s ecosystem, offering both convenience and enhanced privacy.
