Oppo expected to launch flagship with 100MP selfie camera

12 May, 2026 18:00

Apple made headlines when the iPhone 17 series introduced a square-shaped front camera sensor — a design shift that changed how selfies work by enabling portrait and landscape captures without rotating the phone.

Now, leaked information suggests Oppo is not just copying that approach for its next flagship — it may be preparing to leapfrog it entirely, with a 100MP square selfie sensor reportedly in active testing.

What the Leak Actually Says

A post on Weibo — China’s major tech social platform and a reliable early source for smartphone leaks — describes an Android brand testing a 1:1 square sensor for front-facing photography. The post stopped short of naming the company, but pointed strongly toward Oppo through contextual clues. The same source claims the sensor being tested carries a 100MP resolution.

That figure is extraordinary in context. Apple’s iPhone 17 square sensor operates at 18MP — already a significant upgrade over its predecessors. Oppo’s reported 100MP would represent more than five times the pixel count, a gap that goes beyond incremental improvement into a fundamentally different imaging philosophy.

Why the Square Sensor Design Matters

Most smartphones use rectangular front cameras optimized for portrait orientation — the way people naturally hold phones for selfies. Apple’s square sensor solved an obvious problem: selfie videos and photos taken horizontally were cropped or degraded because the sensor wasn’t designed for that orientation.

A square sensor captures equally in both directions, giving software more pixel data to work with regardless of how the phone is held. For content creators shooting vertical and horizontal video interchangeably, this matters considerably.

Background: Oppo’s Camera Ambitions

Oppo’s Find X series has consistently pushed imaging boundaries. The Find X7 Ultra introduced a triple periscope camera system co-engineered with Hasselblad. The brand has invested heavily in computational photography and sensor partnerships, making it one of the few Android manufacturers genuinely competing with Samsung and Apple on camera hardware — not just software processing.

Reports from February 2026 had already flagged that both Oppo and Huawei were exploring square sensor designs. That Oppo has now reportedly moved from exploration to active hardware testing suggests the timeline is concrete, not speculative.

The 100MP Question: Resolution vs. Real-World Quality

Higher megapixels don’t automatically mean better selfies. Sensor size, pixel binning technology, aperture, and computational processing collectively determine real-world image quality. A 100MP sensor crammed into a small front-camera module could underperform an 18MP sensor with larger individual pixels in low-light conditions.

The meaningful question is whether Oppo pairs this sensor with advanced pixel-binning — combining multiple pixels into one for better light capture — and superior ISP (image signal processor) performance.

Outlook

The Oppo Find X10 series is expected to launch in October 2026. If the 100MP square front camera makes it to the final product, it will immediately reframe the flagship selfie camera conversation — and put Apple’s 18MP solution on the defensive heading into iPhone 18 development cycles.
